Dependent Codes

Hello,

I was previously using a different software so i'm a little confused about codes E & H for dependents and just the codes overall. I would think E is the basic for a dependent child who passes all dependency requirements, that isn't a student.

But I have a situation for married filing separately where my client claims the child every year and the child passes all the other tests...So would it be E or H. They are not legally separated & no custody issues.

Also another client who has joint custody with the ex, and usually doesn't claim their child even though from what i'm being told by them, they are the custodial parent by IRS definition. So they internally agreed my client would now claim this child this year... which code is it ? no custody release form was ever signed by either party.

Appreciate all answers, if your going to comment to cry about something, don't comment at all. Thanks

I think you're looking for the dependency codes, column 8 (next to last)

"But I have a situation for married filing separately where my client claims the child every year and the child passes all the other tests...So would it be E or H. They are not legally separated & no custody issues."

Code Q, if the child is being claimed by the noncustodial parent.

Code N, if the custodial parent is claiming the child as a dependent
