anyone seen any posts from abctax55 in the last few days? The Caldor wildfire is looking too close to her location!

I saw her comment last Thursday, but that fire has gotten even scarier in the past 48 hours.

I've been following these CalFires for two weeks. If you know where she is, start with this and zoom in:

https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/

You can get all the way to the fire perimeters. This one:

https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=91c5dc150e53415fa85a2420871aa214

Will let you zoom into the fire perimeter overlaid onto Google-type terrain and if they have done a building audit, you can see structure status and the attached images are helpful.

Firewatch cameras from CalFire and PG&E are here:

http://beta.alertwildfire.org/region/shastamodoc/?camera=Axis-SloatMtn

But these keep making me cry.

I emailed her. She said she's OK (or as well as can be expected). Keeping informed and will evacuate if ordered.

The more I know, the more I don't know.

Sorry guys... it's been a bit chaotic.  Here's my response to Susan's email checking in on me:

************

OK?  Physically, yes - for now.  Mentally.... up for debate.  The 9.15 deadline isn't helping my mindset.

The fire is now *in* the Basin & in the Desolation Wilderness.   Mandatory evacs are in place about 12 miles away, the fire is actually about 20 miles away (as the crow flies or the fires burn...).

I'm in Tahoe City (north west corner of the Lake).  The immediate threat is to South Lake Tahoe, but then possibly up the West side of the Lake towards me.  Not likely to happen under *normal* circumstances but the fires this year aren't behaving *normally* - this thing ran over 7 miles overnight.

The collective 'we' have p.o'd Mother Nature and she's flexing her muscles.

We are prepared to bug-out if there's a mandatory evac notice.  We have friends down in Reno we can go to if necessary, or could go to the Bay Area. The dog is welcome in all those locations 🙂
I can set up shop there & still get most work done.

Thanks for the concern.

I saw the news about the Tahoe area and was starting to get a bit concerned about my favorite alphabet lady.  Hopefully you don’t have to boogie out of there.  How is the smoke?  There were large fires just across the border in Ontario that started up earlier this summer and lately there has been a good size fire near the BWCA and some smaller fires in the BWCA.  The smoke from those fires were really bad here some days and we are farther away from the fires than you are.  Minnesota usually deals with fires in the spring but this year has been so dry we are dealing with them in the summer months.

Stay safe!

For those who have not been there: My favorite saying about California is that it’s a great place, except for where the people live. Well, not many people live around Lake Tahoe, although sometimes it seems like half the country is visiting at the same time. I have wonderful memories of an April 2019 trip that included a half-day drive all the way around the lake, fueled the night before by a buffet feast on the 23rd floor of a casino on the Nevada side. We left the next day, driving down to Sacramento on one of the most scenic highways anywhere even though some of the route was charred by fires several years earlier.

IRS will probably extend the September 15 and October 15 due dates for residents of fire-threatened areas. But I wonder what they will do for practitioners who live there but work for taxpayers elsewhere.

Smoke has been god-awful for 8 days...think AQI in the 400-500 range for days. And NO one has air conditioning around here. I have an air purifier I got for COVID 'protection' at the office. We were able to borrow a big fancy one for home.  They really help.  Today, good air due to Red Flag warnings...which is really bad for fire suppression. I'd rather have the bad air !
