It looks like Form 8889 now has a new Line 2 "Smart Worksheet" that wasn't present in the 2022 software. It seems to be messing up the calculations for Excess HSA Contributions. As an example, I have a client who had $1,450 of excess contributions in 2022 that are carrying forward to 2023. She had HSA contributions via the W-2 of $6,900. This properly allows her to utilize $850 of the $1,450 as current year HSA contributions/deductions. It should leave the remaining $600 of excess carrying forward to 2024. However on Form 5329, it retains the $1,450 and adds the $600 and is trying to carryforward $2,050 of excess contributions to the 2024.
