Last Minute Rush

I hope you good people are having better luck with the last minute rush this year than what I am.

I cannot believe the stupidity of the people who are calling in.

I just had a call from someone who was giggling over the fact that she waited so long this year as if it was funny.

Here we are 8 days before the deadline and she would be lucky that anyone could fit her in.

I gave her a date of April 12th and she said she could not make it.

Needless I told her to go someplace else.

Good job. You should have sent her to Chuck E Cheese's to get her tax returns done.

There is no last minute rush.  The rush is to get the mountain of returns done that are piled up waiting for me to get to them.  

We are going to quit answering the phones and just leave voicemail messages saying that we are on vacation and will return on April 20th ------------------- just to add stress to the lives of people that add stress to our lives by dropping off piles of garbage they expect us to make a rose bush out of.  For the record, for the millionth time this year, yesterday I opened up a return with a 1099S for $130,000.  Just the 1099S.  If anymore are in my pile, I am just going to file their returns showing the 1099S as proceeds with zero cost.  If they don't think it is worthwhile to provide any cost details, I'm just going to go with that 😠

Stupid client # - - -

Sent four returns out last week - parents, two kids, mom.  Email this morning.  I decided to take a quick Easter trip to Italy.  Can you DHL all four returns to Italy and I'll sign them right away.  Hmm, you're out of the country but the kids aren't, the mom isn't and no, I'm not reprinting everything and finding a DHL location.

I had one a couple of weeks ago.  Dropped stuff off and I talked to him for a couple of minutes.  A couple of days later I have a voicemail.  Can I do an extension for them ----------- evidently at the last minute, they decided to meet up with your client in Italy.

What's the rush?  It only takes 5 minutes to file most extensions.

Maybe it takes you 5 minutes because all of your clients are basic and easy.  Last night I had one with over a dozen states.  I had another with five states with PTE.  Today I have one with 17 K-1's.  So don't put all clients into one category.

The easy ones take 3 minutes.  I suppose there are some OCD practitioners who insist on preparing the return before filing the extension, but I know you're not one of them.

.. most extensions can be done quickly, but there are other extensions that do take a while. I've done both scenarios this year. It's also a good idea to keep a written list of all the extensions on the cover of a master extension file folder. It only takes a little bit more time And then you can use this to check off the returns as they are finished. You never know when the computer may go.

I have learned to love extensions.. at first I was against them for fear of clients not wanting one and going elsewhere but I switched my voice mail two weeks ago to say that there are no more appointments available until after April 18 but if you would like to have me file an extension for you we can then meet after April 18.  So far lots of people leaving messages for me to file that extension. extension list up to over 100.. spreads some work out and helps me not go into my normal post tax season let down as I love tax season and am sad to see it end.

But you won't love them as much the year that a bunch of those have balance dues that weren't paid with the extension.

I have already made up my mind that the 2024 tax season will be my last and I am not going to file an extension for anybody. If they need one then they will have to go someplace else because on April 15, 2024 I will file my last tax return and 55 years as a tax preparer will be at an end.

I'm not sure why clients think it's funny that they are late.  Do they think we are sitting around with nothing to do, just waiting for them to drop on by?

No.  They don't think it's funny, they've become extremely lazy.  The perfect example - I need a copy of my last three year's tax returns for the mortgage refi.  Yeah so, I give you a copy each year.  I know, they're somewhere.  I know you have it in your files.  It's not that we can bill them.  That's not the issue. It's the hassle. 

I track how many redo's on returns I have to do - my fault, client fault, investment house corrected 1099, etc.  First year I ever hit 40 redo's.  It's hard enough to get it done once.  But a second time?

I agree--it's laziness and an "I don't care" attitude.

We also get calls for copies of returns.  I do remind them that we give them a copy every year but they are too lazy to look for it.  So we have to take time out of our day (unchargeable) and get it for them. Quite annoying.

We've started a list of clients we are firing.  Some are just not worth the time or hassle anymore.

It's not only the clients that drive you crazy, try the financial advisors.  I had a couple of clients tell me that their financial advisor said "There could be a corrected 1099 coming so you might want to wait until April to file your return".  Ok, and I'm going to tell the clients wait until April 18th before your make your IRA contribution with that financial advisor just to make sure we have everything right before we turn over that check. 

Or today's message that was left for me.  Mom died in early 2022.  Daughter calls and says that she knows I told her that mom wouldn't need to file this year but the financial advisor said that we would want to file to close her mom's account out.  Say what?  Mom hasn't filed a 1040 in close to 10 years.  The only thing she has filed during the last ten years is the Minnesota property tax and renters credit return.  Do you really think we need to file?  Is the IRS waiting to hear from her after all of these years?

Yes, Agent Brown, ID 871569784CD1453 has been sitting on pins and needles waiting for this tax return.  

Client has 2020 payroll tax issue. We know -0- due, IRS says $14k.  **bleep**.  Last week or two get a letter, they granted my request for a hearing.  This May in Boston.  I'm in Maryland.  Really?

Last Minute Rush? …. Fireball related or something else?….

Client sent his paperwork last Thursday with a note apologizing for being so late…. Had somewhat of a windfall year… cashed in RSUs, NQs and more…. I had the sticker shock talk with him today…. You may want to liquidate some assets… you owe about 106K…. Good news… the estimates you paid were sufficient that there is no underpayment penalty…. You made the money, you have the money… you’ll pay it next week.

Let us talk stupid here.

I just finished a tax return for a client that had $15000.00 in Gambling winnings in 2022.

He was completely surprised when I told him we can only deduct up to $15000.00 in gambling losses when he had several thousand dollars more.

… and then, today, there’s the idiot who consolidated his stocks (formerly held by comp u share) with a local financial advisor… has the same 25k 1099 div income but is now paying 8500 advisory fees… no trades… nada… 

how much you want to bet the FA will try to liquidate some or all of the stocks in favor of funds and ptp’s … guess i have to have a chat with him…

Good for you!. The thing in our office is dropping off late and telling me "it's just 2 W2's" or the kids will have to wait also? Yes Yes Yes... A lot of balances due this year. I guess the Administration is getting the stimi's back one way or another. I am ready to tell a few of my long time clients goodbye. They have become the worse! One client telling me that the company in CA didn't compute the state wages and wants me to "figure them per the days she was there, half day here, half day there, etc. Ah no.. get the wonderful people at ADP to learn their job and compute it. And give her the 4/18 estimates due for CA. Be glad to do an extension while waiting on the corrected W2. I'm about to go Judge J on some of these. 25 years private firm and just don't have the patience, maybe I should retire April 19th and leave them hanging like they do me. Don't even get me started on the lost emails that go to Gmails...

Had message from client last week, wanted a massive favor from me. Asked me to email them a copy of this years return because they had things piled in front of their file cabinet which would be a bothersome task to move.  Plus needed that day for a deadline to get bank approval on a loan to purchase some property.   

Guess what I did.............NOTHING !!!!

A client tells me about trying to help out an elderly relative.  She isn't worried about him being vulnerable because his "wealth advisor" keeps an eye on his finances.  I tell her about FINRA and its Broker Check.  She mentions this guy is with this outfit in Minnesota that will remain nameless, but I have seen their lack of supervision before.  Curious myself, I look him up and there are 67 disputes on his rap sheet, including many with a six-figure payout.  To his credit, the most recent was in 2006, for events several years before that, so maybe he got religion.  

Another client, 96, sells her house and puts the proceeds in "managed accounts" at places whose names start with JPM and Fi.  After $5,500 of fees, she ends up with $11,000 of dividends and $18,000 of net short-term loss.  Now there's a reason to live to 100 -- claiming $3,000 a year.

Exactly. What does it say about me? I won't say but too many years in the business tells me I should do extensions 4/1 and take the rest of the month off after dealing with some.

To file extensions (approx 350 at this point due to late arrivals), open the file, click the **bleep** print them and have IRS take 6 months to post them, meanwhile I am fielding phone calls, IRS notices, and now doing IRS phone calls to new trainees that like to read an algorithm. That's if you can get through... Guess I am stupid.

@rcooley25 make sure there is documentation of that $15,000 in gambling losses. Fellow practitioner had a client that won a similar amount, and he was audited by the IRS and they checked every single loss ticket/receipt.

I posted this years ago.  In Maryland we have what is called the dirty shoe rule.  With the Preakness held here we have a couple of race tracks.  People who lose the race just drop the tickets on the floor / ground.  Others would scoop them up and claim them as losses.  The state says that any ticket that looked like it was on the ground would not be counted towards gambling losses.  The best way at casinos is to get a printout from the casino rewards card that will show the amount of money you spent, assuming all of it was used with the card.  The problem there is the card printout would show all winnings, not just the W-2G reported winnings.

@abctax55 unethical FA’s have a special place in my heart…. Anytime (after 4/18)…. 

depending on the circumstances, another option is to complain to broker/dealers compliance department.

@IRonMaN years ago I prepared a return for an out-of-state client . After the return was finished, in fact after April 15th I believe, the client received a 1099R late, which she did not know was coming as it was the first year . She was an elderly client and as honest as can be.. I had to file a corrected return. I sent my invoice for the corrected return which was a very reasonable fee to The Entity that issued the 1099R late. They paid it. Not sure if that can happen today but maybe someone else out there knows.

To date, information provided by client ---------------- one e-mail claiming it's almost text time. 😢

@linda2  They only do that because you allow it.  Tell them you will keep it in their file until they tell you that you have everything.  And the first time they try to drop off incomplete items, tell them "we won't charge you our $25 incomplete-delivery fee this time, because you must not have noticed it in the mailing we sent before the start of tax season."
