Form 8889 HSAs deduction

Form 8889-S Health Savings Accounts

Both spouses have HSA with high deductible and both employers contributed signified by Code W on their Form W2.

Form 8889-S Line 13 calculates the HSA deduction as the smaller of Line 2 (HSA contributions you made in 2020) or Line 12 (calculated available deduction based on plan type and code W from Form W2).

Line 2 is $0 because on Code W amount (which doesn't belong on Line 2)

Line 12 is $3,800 (Family plan $7,100 less both spouses code W amts of $3,300)

Line 13 should be $0 but it's appearing as $3,800.

Line 13 is being carried to Page 1 as a deduction as it should but the amount should be $0 not $3,800.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a software glitch?

It was because there was an excess contribution last year that was allowed to be deducted this year.

What amount is on each W2 under code W. They are limited to $7200 total for both, or $3600 each

Taxpayer's code W $2,200,

Spouse's code W $1,100

Theyre well below the limits, dont go fiddling with figures on the 8889, you just mark the box at the top in the smart worksheet  under Line 2, as SELF or FAMILY on each of their 8889s...thats all you need to fill in on the 8889 and all the errors will disappear.
