Client kicked her husband out 8 years ago because of abuse. They are still legally married (she's trying to get a divorce). She has not filed in years, and wants to file in 2021. Looks like she will have to file married filing separately. The problem is, she does not know, or has any way of finding out his social security number that is required. What to do?
You probably need to file by paper.
Does your attorney have any of your spouse's financial documents? That might show his SSN. Does she know whether he has filed returns for the years she hasn't filed? Have her register on the IRS site, they may have tax history she can use if filed MFJ in the past. Same may be available from State. Get a POA and ask for copies of prior year MFJ returns.
