I have a client that received a CP2000 for some stock sales that were not reported on their 2022 tax return. When reviewed the IRS was correct they were not reported but naturally they did not have the cost basis, so we filed an amended return citing the CP2000. When I check the status with "Where's my amended return", I get "We cannot provide any information on your amended return". This amendment was mailed in December in 2024, as it could not be electronically filed as they were transitioning for the new tax year.
My question is, should I refile the amendment as it has been 6 months with no status change. I am wondering if they did not receive it and the client is getting updated notices.
Did you respond to the CP2000 and include a copy of the 1040X/Sch D or is she still getting hate mail from IRS?
When I followed up with them, they indicated they did not
Yes, cited the CP2000 on the amendment and added a sch D and all backup information. And yes, still getting hate mail. I think 6 months without a status is concerning
They did not. I should have mailed it myself. My mistake. I get concerned that they may not have signed it. I marked where they were to sign and instructed to mail certified.
Last time I saw a CP2000, it specifically instructed NOT to file an amended return. Just respond to the notice. IRS is a big place and the people who audit returns are not in the same office, or even the same city, as the people who process amended returns.
IRS says amended returns filed in March are being processed now, so maybe a hold has been placed on the CP2000 until the 1040-X is processed. Or maybe they have put a hold on the 1040-X process so they can finish the audit based on the response. This was a 2022 return? When was the CP2000 sent? Most of those would have gone out by last July.
This was for a 2022 return. CP2000 was issued on October 28,2024. Response with the Amendment which had CP2000 notated on it issued on Nov 17, 2024.
