Client filed 2019 tax returns with amounts due and made payments. Client now has additional deductions I assume 1040 X for 2019 needs to be filed or is there an alturnative?

Amend, or file a superseding return.
Right NOW, either one will have to be paper filed. Which, will take a long, long time for processing by the IRS.
Efiling of amended returns is on the horizon (this summer, per the IRS). When Intuit will be ready is anyone's guess.
So pick one - AND inform your client that it'll be a while before a refund arrives.
