When you file an extension on a rejected return, how do you know it went through ?

A return was rejected because the Security PIN wasn't entered.  Client called IRS and they said it would be 21 days before his PIN arrived via mail.  I filed for an extension, but there is no notification that it went through.  How can I confirm the Extension was transmitted

Have you checked for acknowledgements to see if it was accepted?
