Non-resident spouse SSN error

Peter
Level 1

I am using Proconnect.

I have a client who is filing MFS, her spouse does not have a SSN or ITIN. I have marked the spouse's SSN as not applicable and clicked the box "Spouse is a nonresident alien and does not have an SSN/ITIN (MFS Only)". However, I am still getting this "Spouse's social security number is invalid. A valid SSN must be between 001-01-0001 through 665-99-9999 and 667-01-0001 through 899-99-9999 or must be a valid ITIN. US - Ref #54321" diagnostic error. I filed for her last year and cleared this up, but I am not sure how to fix it this year. The only difference is that she moved to the UK.

He can put applied for and fill out the W7 form for  her under Miscellaneous forms.  She would be considered a resident as the spouse of her husband for tax filing services only.  Then  it takes anywhere from 8 weeks up to arrive.  He will need that number for her state returns so they cannot be filed unless he gets the number.  She will need a passport or other identification to apply for the Itin.  Here is the IRS link for more info.  https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-w-7

Or she can file paper returns, right?

Have you done what the bottom of his Help Article says to do?

Follow these steps to indicate the spouse is a nonresident alien:

  1. From the Input Return tab, go to General Miscellaneous Information/Direct Deposit.
  2. Under the Miscellaneous section, check the Spouse is a nonresident alien and does not have an SSN/ITIN (MFS only) box.

Yes, I clicked that box, that is how I got last year's return to e-file.
