If my client was a dependent last year and mom got the 3rd stimulus for him, can he claim the 3rd stimulus for him this year if he is not a dependent this year?

Fill in the tax form and it does the computation for you. Unless you are not sure he is qualified (foreign national, etc) and you need to check on it through the IRS?

The third Stimulus payout, which started in Jan 2021, has different eligibility rules than EIP#1 and #2, as to dependents. This payout was also a projection, using 2019 or 2020 tax returns, then reconciled against Actuals on the 2021 tax return. Stimulus info can be found at these links:

https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center

https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/covid-19-home/3rd-eip-and-2021-rrc/

And don't overlook that the topic Title isn't also the place to put all the part of your question; that would go in the reply/comment box. That way, you won't be cut off or limited in characters.

I raise the question because last year dependents that couldn't claim the stimulus in the previous year, because they were dependents, filed their own return the next year to get the stimulus. Is that the case this year?

"because last year dependents that couldn't claim the stimulus in the previous year, because they were dependents, filed their own return the next year to get the stimulus. Is that the case this year?"

Did you go to those links and follow along, or just fill in their forms to see what appears?

No one last year claimed a stimulus in the previous year. It's like this:

Either a 2019 or 2020 tax return is used to project what tax year 2021 filing would be for a person, to determine if they were going to be sent an advanced payment.

Then, their 2021 Actuals, on the tax form, is what you reconcile to, against what they got, if anything.

And for EIP #3, the qualifications have changed.

No one knows these people except for you. You have to look at the info or fill in the info.
