My apologies, it didn't post correctly..   Essentially, I have a client with 2 first names, and on state returns, the second name goes to the initials;  how do I correct it so both first names display.   (State is VA)

I don't think you can.

I understand what the preference is but you can't change that, unfortunately, and it wouldn't affect name control for e-filing purposes.
