How does the return compare the paper or pdf copy of the return that you originally filed?

I didn’t want to mark as solved. The return is identical to the filed return minus the item that should have not been taxed.  The letter and return match, just the federal authorization is different

the federal authorization is different, but WHO CARES! You CANNOT efile for 2019. You can only efile for current year (2022) and two prior years (2020, 2021). 2019 needs to be a paper filing.

Interesting you say that. I could have sworn some pro connect article said you can efile the amendment. I thought that was crazy and I know they started the efiling amended 21 and later returns. So I guess I just turn off electronic filing and the instructions should correct themselves as to where to mail both fed and NY?

Amendments can be efiled, BUT the IRS only allows for current year and two prior. I do not know what NYS does. You need to do some research. Maybe you can efile an amended for NYS, but you can not efile an amended for IRS for 2019. That one is a paper tax return.

"Prior Year Returns – MeF allows filing of prior year 1040 returns. As a new tax form type is added to the MeF platform, tax returns will be accepted for the current tax year only. As subsequent tax years are added to the system, MeF will accept the current tax year and two prior tax years.

For example:

  • In January 2015, 1040 MeF accepted Tax Years 2014, 2013, and 2012.
  • In January 2016, 1040 MeF accepted Tax Years 2015, 2014, and 2013.

Note: MeF does not accept prior year extensions (Forms 2350 and 4868)"
