Whose return are you asking about Mom or kid?

I am really confused. I thought you were asking about how to do the son's return. Son would not be HOH.

I regret any confusion. I am doing both returns and I wanted to file Mom's with the dependent to facilitate the HoH. But I couldn't get ProConnect to use the reduced std ded on the son's return.  All set now.
