Proconnect offers the option for Foreign US instead of an EIN when entering foreign wages earned on form 2555. Proconnect will not support this choice when e-filing and flags it as a critical diagnostic. Even Proconnect chat had issues with the critical diagnostic and said to mark it to be ignored, and paper file if it is rejected. Many foreign employers may not have US based FEIN's to satisfy this requirement.
I have the same issue! What should we put for (b) Employer identification number (EIN) for taxpayer that works overseas but the employer has no affiliation to a US entity
I had to do paper file and it takes a long time. We should be able to e-file for Form 2555. If income is earned outside the US, most companies will not have a US EIN or be a Foreign US Entity.
We did choose the option for Foreign US, then ignored the critical diagnostic and e-filed. The return has gone through.
There is a checkbox on Form 2555 screen "Compensation not reported on W-2". Checking this box will allow you to file without entering Tax ID #.
