Here are the details - I am working on a return for an elderly couple in which both the taxpayer and spouse are claimed as dependents on their daughter's return. They need to file separately and both returns were rejected because the the box labeled "Someone can claim your spouse as a dependent" is not checked. Even though it is clearly marked that way on the input screen. I have been told that this is a glitch with the software (shocker!). We are doing what we can to not file a paper return (as both are suffering from dementia).
Any advice on how to correct this would be most appreciated!!
She is power of attorney. But she is non-IRS POA. Can she still sign?
Yes if the POA authorizes her to sign.
