multi state set up for married couple

married couple filed joint federal.  one spouse lived in PA all year and the other spouse spent half year in PA and half in NJ.  how do you set it up so that the split-year spouse has a part year return for both pa and nj and the other spouse resided in pa all year

Read both states' forms instructions and make sure they permit the presentation you want. Looks like for both NJ and PA, you have to file separate returns in order to accomplish what you'd like to do. So you'd have one ProConnect client for the federal MFJ, then two MFS returns for the state returns.

It also looks like both states allow you to elect to file jointly, as if you'd both been resident for the entire year. I don't know how that interacts with reciprocity, though.
