This is important to avoid irate clients when their estimates don't get paid!
When a taxpayer had chosen electronic payment of quarterly estimates and payments in the past through Lacerte, the tax organizer for the next year shows a "1" in the fields for electronic payment of estimates and taxes as if it is going to happen again for the current year. However, Lacerte does not actually proforma these entries in the Lacerte file itself and the payments won't be set up!
Consequently, the client thinks this will happen again, but the returns will not be setup to pay the estimates or balances electronically. There is also no indication in the program itself that electronic payments were done in the past. A preparer would have to go to the organizer or the prior year return to look at these fields to see if that happened in the prior year.
The inconsistency between the organizer and the program is the problem! The choice should proforma since that is what the organizer indicates and most people get in a pattern of doing the same thing each year. But if that is not the case, then it would be great to have a diagnostic such as: "In the prior year, quarterly estimates or balances due were paid electronically. You must set these options up again for the current year, if desired."
Thanks for the idea to proforma electronic payment of estimates/taxes. We are changing the status to "Open for voting" since it has been around for over 30 days and no longer considered "New".
