How do I enter a disability exemption on NJ return? They are NOT blind.

I have a client in NJ who is disabled, but not blind. How do I get the exemption on NJ only?

Line 8 says "Blind/Disabled," meaning one or the other. Check the box.

This does not work properly. When checking the "blind" box, it also marks it as blind on the federal 1040, and increases the standard deduction. I only want disabled exemption on NJ.

You use Lacerte, I use Pro Series. You lost me.

Poke around in the state miscellaneous input screens and maybe you'll find something.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Screen 3 > New Jersey Miscellaneous > 4th item > Disabled: 1 for self, 2 for spouse, 3 for both.

Did you try find the box on the form and Right Click on that box (or line..) and select Jump to Input

Well, hallelujah! Thank you. I even called Lacerte support and they had no answer!

For future use, here are a few ways to go fishing for that input

  • Go to the forms and find the box or line and RIGHT CLICK, then click Jump to Input
  • In the General input screen use  Ctrl + F and a word or very short phrase with no verbs to search. Like "disable" or "disabled"
  • Use Google to search, as the search box in this is virtually useless. Again, short phrase "Lacerte NJ disable exemption" (Try it) I think it would probably lead back here, but seems to only open on the search box here. Again, the support site somewhat sucks.
