the California 540 is still not "final" and will not print even after the current release. When will the form be available? Calling support gets me an answer like "maybe on 2/8 which is not acceptable since I can't give my clients their copy of the return. And will stack up work for the staff trying to assemble large numbers of returns if that is the case. Can you give me some guidance?

If you want the form now, you'd probably need to file a complaint with FTB (about FTB and not Intuit).
Intuit may not be the greatest but they can't develop and publish a form that's not yet made available by the FTB (https://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/).
Once the FTB finalizes the form, Intuit can then update theirs and obtain the approval for release.
In the meantime, you can check this Lacerte/PTO website periodically for status updates on forms and schedules: https://lfs.intuit.com/
Interestingly, the form does appear to be available on the FTB site. Thanks for the link.
I cannot find any information about updates to Lacerte other than a mid Feb release date. I'm trying to get a handle on all of this so I can plan my workflow. I'd expect that someone at Lacerte would have an idea as to what's happening with this.

Your eyesight must be a lot better than mine because this is what I get after clicking on Form 540:
This form is currently not available
We are making annual changes to our forms at this time. The form you are looking for may be:
•Unavailable
•Not fully functional
•In the process of being updated
Please check again later, or find forms using our Forms and Publication Search.
Your browser may be stuck. What happens when you use this link?
@BobKamman You're right. Something wrong with my browser. It says unavailable on the Linux browser but it opens fine when I switch to Windows. It doesn't even show that the form couldn't open because of compatibility issues. Weird.
Agree the ball is in Intuit's court.
I saw something posted earlier for Lacerte that CA was delayed until the 29tth. Hopefully an update tomorrow will open the gates.
Thank you. I couldn't find anything. That would be awesome as we could start processing returns. I'll check for updates.
Hmm - I saw this in the diagnostics.
Release dates are listed at https://proconnect.intuit.com/lacerte/forms-finder/
where it gives a definitive I DON'T KNOW
