Do you think a diagnostic would be appropriate saying that PMI is not currently being carried to Sch A and the return should be waiting for an update??

PMI is on PS as well but does not calculate & carry. PMI has not been extended for 2018 and will most likely not be. I assume its there just in case.

Its not deductible. No diagnostic should be needed. No software update will help.
