The IRS extended the due date of the 2020 Form 1040 and related tax payments from April 15 to May 17. The announcement does not extend the due date for gift tax returns due 4/15. To extend we can file Form 8892 but that must be paper filed. Normally a timely e-filed 4/15 individual extension extends the gift return but a 5/17 extension this year will not it appears. Will an individual extension e-filed by 4/15 still work to extend a gift return, thereby avoiding having to snail mail a Form 8892 ?

Yes. Extending the 1040 return by 4/15 will achieve the extension of the gift tax return.
IF you...AND you...THEN...
file Form 4868 or Form 2350...do not expect to owe gift and/or GST tax...do not use Form 8892.
file Form 4868 or Form 2350...expect to owe gift and/or GST tax...use Form 8892-V, Payment Voucher, to pay gift and/or GST tax.
need to extend the time to file Form 709...are not requesting an extension for your individual income tax return...use Form 8892. See instructions.
