Is the procedure for filing a "corrected" 1040 return different from an "amended" return?
If
an error is detected on a recently e-filed 1040, and we wish to correct
it PRIOR to the due date of the return, can it be e-filed once again as
a "corrected" return (i.e., will the IRS accept a second e-filing of
the taxpayer's return?), or must it instead need to be paper-filed as an
amended return?

You only get one shot at an e-filed return. Once it is accepted, no additional e-filing of any sort can be done for the return. Amended or superseded returns must be paper filed.
