Personal tax return was rejected by IRS/CA-FTB. Payment was made to CA-FTB. To correct return does an amended return need to be filed or correction of original return?

Correct the issue that caused the rejection, and resubmit.

You can't *amend* a return that hasn't yet been processed.

You should ideally correct the returns within the perfection period.

Even if, for some reason, the returns cannot be e-filed, the paper returns should still be filed as originals since the returns were never accepted like Anna says.

But (assuming that the return is on extension...) isn't the perfection period really all the way to October 15?
