You need to activate (type the year in) the 1040X BEFORE you make any changes.  If a state is involved, be sure to activate the state amended for as well, once both are active, start making your changes, then the original column will auto fill.

In the event that you've already made the changes and its too much work to undo everything, you can type the original figures into that first column manually.
