Identity theft is a growing concern for tax professionals, as cybercriminals continue to develop new tactics to exploit personal and financial data. This course provides tax professionals with essential knowledge to identify, prevent, and respond to identity theft in tax preparation.

Participants will learn about common fraud schemes, how identity theft affects tax returns and the warning signs of compromised client information. The session also explores the IRS’s efforts to combat tax-related identity theft and offers practical steps for strengthening data security, protecting client information and assisting victims in the recovery process.

 

By completing this session, you will be able to:

  • Recognize and differentiate various forms of identity theft that commonly affect taxpayers, including phishing, data breaches, and fraudulent tax return filings.

  • Understand how identity theft impacts tax preparation by analyzing real-world cases and identifying potential red flags in client returns.

  • Implement proactive security measures to safeguard client information, including the use of secure passwords, multi-factor authentication, and encryption tools.

  • Identify common vulnerabilities in tax practices that cybercriminals exploit and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.

  • Educate clients on best practices to protect their personal and financial information from identity theft schemes.

  • Respond effectively to identity theft incidents by following IRS guidelines for reporting fraud, assisting affected clients, and implementing recovery strategies.

That's a lot of information to cram into an hour.  Especially when what practitioners really need to know, is that IRS is so far incapable of dealing with the problem.
