Lacerte does not identify the corresponding input fields for those codes added, modified, or deleted, nor are all changes easy to identify.
To isolate differences between the return as it is now and the prior return:
- Compare a printout of the return before changes with a printout of the return after changes, or
- If the return in the Forms view is different than the return you e-filed, you may find the changes by comparing the View e-file report with the printout of the return after changes.
See Viewing and Printing the Contents of an E-filed Return for more information on how to view the return that was e-filed.
Interpreting electronic filing XML content:
The e-file is created and sent in a XML format. To read the XML you want to look for the area that is different, for instance if you know that Total Income Amount has changed you would need to compare the amounts on Form 1040, lines 7-21 on your printout to the section.

Instead of using numbered lines in the e-file, each "line" under the section is the title (example: Line 7, Wages of the form = of the e-file). This should help narrow down which line is causing the discrepancy.
Once you have determined which line is different, you will want to go to that Input Screen and compare your documents and entries.
Notes-
- Some discrepencies between returns can be caused by a change in user options, so not every change is going to be visible on an input screen.
- Also, any issues that were resolved on an update could impact the current return. After the return is e-filed and you have received an acceptance please make sure to lock the clients return. See Locking and Unlocking Tax Returns for more information.
