Generating Form 8283 Noncash Contributions in Lacerte

Form 8283 changed format and instructions starting in TY23 and TY23 contains inputs for both the old and new formats. View instructions for the previous format here.
- It is important to note that in TY23 you can only use one set of inputs - either the Noncash Contributions (8283) screen inputs or the inputs in the screens labeled NEW.
- If you attempt to use both sets of inputs, the 8283 will generate using only the information from the Noncash Contributions (8283) inputs and not all information will carry to the 8283.
- If you are going to use inputs in the screens labeled NEW, you must delete all information in the Noncash Contributions (8283) screen.
Form 8283 (TY23 and beyond)
Enter Donee Information
- Open Noncash Contributions (8283) screen.
- In the 8283 list, select Donee Information.
- Enter all information for the Donee. This is required in order to be able to select the Donee (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) in the Section A and Section B screens.
- To add an additional Donee, select Add at the bottom of the Donee list.
Report contributions less than $5,000
- Open Noncash Contributions (8283) screen.
- In the 8283 list, select Contributions of $5,000 or Less (Section A).
- In the Donee Information section, select the drop down for Donee (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) and then select the correct donee for the property you are reporting.
- Only donees entered in the Donee Information screen will be available in the drop-down and you won't be able to manually type a donee in this input.
- In the Type of Property section, select the drop down for Type of property donated (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) and then select the correct property type you are reporting.
- Fill out the Original Owner information section if applicable. This information will print on the 8283 in the fields labeled Name and Identifying Number at the top of Form 8283.
- Fill out all applicable information in the Donated Property Information section.
- To add an additional property donated, select Add at the bottom of the Property list.
Report contributions over $5,000
- Open Noncash Contributions (8283) screen.
- In the 8283 list, select Contributions Over $5,000 (Section B).
- In the Donee Information section, select the drop down for Donee (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) and select the correct donee for the property you are reporting and fill out any other applicable information.
- Only donees entered in the Donee Information screen will be available in the drop-down and you won't be able to manually type a donee in this input.
- In the Type of Property section, select the drop down for Type of property donated (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) and then select the correct property type you are reporting and fill out any other applicable information.
- Fill out the Original Owner information section if applicable. This information will print on the 8283 in the fields labeled Name and Identifying Number at the top of Form 8283.
- Fill out all applicable information in the Donated Property Information section.
- To add an additional property donated, select Add at the bottom of the Property list.
Form 8283 old format (TY23 and prior years)
Report contributions less than $5,000
- Open Noncash Contributions (8283) screen.
- In the Charity list, select or add the charity.
- In the Sections list, select Noncash Contributions (8283).
- Enter the Donee information.
- Select the button for Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint.
- In the Sections list, select Contributions of $5000 or Less.
- If the items are valued at more than $500, enter the Method Used to Determine Fair Market Value (Ctrl + T or Describe) and How Property Acquired (Ctrl + T or Describe).
- Make the appropriate entries, in m/d/y format, for Date of Contribution (Negative Date = Various) and Date Acquired (Negative Date = Various).
- In the appropriate input fields, enter all other applicable information.
Report contributions over $5,000
- Open Noncash Contributions (8283) screen.
- In the Charity list, select or add the charity.
- In the Sections list, select Noncash Contributions (8283).
- Enter the Donee information.
- Select the button for Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint.
- In the Sections list, select Contributions of More than $5000.
- Enter the Type of Property Donated.
- Make the appropriate entries, in m/d/y format, for Date Received by Charitable Organization and Date Acquired by Donor (Negative Date = Various) (m/y).
- In the appropriate input fields, enter all other applicable information.
Report noncash contributions under $500 (Individual)
- Open Screen 25, Itemized Deductions.
- In the Sections list, select Noncash Contributions.
- In the appropriate percentage limitation field of Noncash Contributions, press CTRL+E to open the Noncash Contributions window.
- In the Description field of the Noncash Contributions window, enter the name of the organization receiving the contribution.
- In the Amount field, enter the value of the contribution made to the organization.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each recipient organization.
- Select OK when finished.
After completing inputs on Noncash Contributions (8283) screen, the donated items aren't appearing on Form 8283
Go to Noncash Contributions (8283) screen to ensure the Description of Donated Property is completed for each contribution made.
If the Form 8283 is not generating, it is normally due to missing or incomplete information. Verify the following information:
- Verify the input is complete for the type of property donated:
- If the property is a vehicle - Vehicle identification number, Year, Make and model, Condition and mileage
- Property other than vehicles - Description of property must be entered
- Confirm the Date of contribution is entered and falls in the current year.
- Verify the Fair market value has been entered.
- In the Individual module, Form 8283 won't generate in a situation where the standard deduction is being taken instead of itemizing.
