Amending an individual 1040X for a return not created in ProConnect Tax

SOLVEDby Intuit114Updated 3 weeks ago

This article helps you prepare Form 1040X for a client whose original Form 1040 was prepared by a different preparer or in a different tax program. If you prepared the client's original 1040 in ProConnect, see this article instead.

If you receive an error message along the lines of "You currently don't have permissions to [action]. Contact your firm's Admin for authorization," either when trying to create new returns or when e-file roles have changed for tax year 2023, see here for how your firm Admin can resolve it.

The first thing you need to do to amend an individual 1040X for a return not created in ProConnect is to create a new return.

  1. Go to your Tax Returns list.
  2. Select the Create tax return button at the top right corner of your screen.
  3. Select Add new.
    • If the client is already present in your Client List, use the Select an existing client section dropdown list instead.
  4. Select 1040 - Individual for the return Type.
  5. Enter the client's basic information.
    • First name and Last name are required entries.
  6. Click the Save button at the bottom of the window.
  7. Choose the return Tax year from the dropdown menu.
    • You can use the current year Form 1040 program to amend prior year returns, if desired.
  8. Click Save.
  9. On the Profile tab, check the Federal Amended box if you intend to e-file. Make sure to keep the Federal box checked, as well.
    • If you're going to paper file the amendment, uncheck all boxes to trigger the appropriate instructions in your client letter.
  10. Click in the Add a state return to choose a state, if applicable.
  11. Proceed with the next step of steps to create Form 1040X.

Follow these steps to create Form 1040X in the program:

  1. Go to the Input Return tab.
  2. Enter the taxpayer's (and spouse's, if applicable) details in the Client Information screen.
    • Select the Dependents screen to add any dependents who will be claimed on the corrected return (1040X column C).
  3. From the left of the screen, select Miscellaneous Forms and choose Amended Return (1040-X).
  4. Select General Information and Federal (1040X) from the dropdown menu.
  5. Under the Return(s) to Amend section, check the box labeled Amending federal return.
  6. Enter a 1 in 1=amending state return, if applicable.
  7. Enter the Year to amend (MANDATORY).
  8. Scroll down to the Miscellaneous Information section and complete any applicable fields.
  9. Scroll down to the Federal Income Tax Return section.
  10. Fill in the As Originally Reported column with the amounts from the previously filed 1040.
    • These amounts will populate Form 1040X, column A.
  11. Leave the Correct Amount [Override] column completely blank if you want the program to calculate the corrected amounts. Enter all income, deductions, and credits in the input screens you would use for an original return.
    • For example, to report wages, go to Income > Wages, Salaries, Tips (W-2) and enter all of the W-2 data.
  12. From the top of the 1040X screen, select Explanation of Changes and enter a Federal explanation of changes to print with the return.
  13. Go to the Check Return tab and review the 1040X for accuracy.

Common questions:

The 1040-X follows typical e-file availability rules, where the current year and two prior can be filed electronically.

Only an e-filed Form 1040 or 1040-SR can be amended this way due to IRS limitations. ProSeries will not support e-filing an amended 1040-SR. 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ filers will not be able to e-file amended returns.

Beginning in processing year 2023, direct deposit can be requested for electronically filed amended returns for tax year 2022, but isn't supported in tax year 2021.

These returns must still be paper filed. The filing status of any e-filed amended return must match the filing status of the originally filed return.

These returns must still be paper filed. The taxpayer's (and spouse's) TIN or SSN must match that of the original filing when e-filing.

These returns must still be paper filed. Dependents claimed on someone else's return can't be claimed on an e-filed amended return.

Yes, you should have your client sign a new Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization.

Per the IRS Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions page: Filers will be allowed to electronically file up to three "accepted" Amended Returns. After the third accepted Amended Return, all subsequent attempts will reject.
