Using the Missing Data Utility in Lacerte

The Missing Data Utility feature adds a red and white border to the field to help identify fields that are missing data that's needed from the client to complete the return. There are two methods for collecting missing data.

Follow these steps to mark an input field with the missing data border:

  1. Right-click on the field that you want to mark for missing data.
  2. Choose Missing Data in the pop-up menu.
    • The active cell will now have the red and white missing data border.
    • Fields with a Ctrl+E screen can't have the Ctrl+E screen open when marking the field as missing data.
    • You can't select Missing Data from the grid input fields.

How do I remove missing data tags?

If you want to remove one tag, right-click the field and choose Missing Data again. To remove all missing data tags for a client, do the following:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Clear All Missing Data Tags for Client.
  2. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog box.

Follow these steps to collect missing data from the client through Intuit Link:

For those using Lacerte 2015 and later, you can collect missing data using Intuit Link.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Missing Data.
    • This will open a window showing a listing of the missing data needed. If you entered the client's email address on Screen 1, Client Information, it will appear in the Send To field. If the client's email address is missing, you can enter it in that field.
  2. Click the Send button in the lower right corner to create the email.
    • This won't send it yet.
  3. Click the Use Intuit Link button on the lower right corner.
    • This will open the Collect Missing Data with Intuit Link window.
  4. Review and modify the body of the email, if desired.
  5. Once you finish modifying the email, click Send.
    • This will send the missing data requests to the client.
  6. Click OK to close the confirmation screen.
    • You can also click the Intuit Link hyperlink to view the task list.
    • The missing data request items will be sent to your clients Intuit Link portal, where they can answer them by going to the To Do tab.

Follow these steps to send an email to the client requesting the missing data:

This method requires a MAPI-compliant email program. Some versions of AOL and some web-based email programs won't work using this method.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Missing Data.
    • This will open a window showing a listing of the missing data needed. If you entered the client's email address on Screen 1, Client Information, it will appear in the Send To field. If the client's email address is missing, you can enter it in that field.
  2. Click the Send button at the lower right corner to create the email.
    • Your email program should launch with the same message that appeared in the Lacerte.
  3. Review and modify the email, if desired.
  4. Once you finish modifying the email, send it.
