How to transfer TurboTax returns to ProSeries
by Intuit•20• Updated 1 week ago
Before you start:
- Individual tax returns from TurboTax desktop or TurboTax for Mac can be directly transferred to ProSeries Professional or ProSeries Basic for the same tax year.
- Starting in tax year 2023 you can now import individual tax returns that were created in TurboTax Online in the same tax year.
- Returns prepared in TurboTax for Business: Corporate, S Corporate, and Partnership (Forms 1065, 1120, and 1120S) can be transferred to corresponding ProSeries Business returns for the next year. For example, a 2019 TurboTax for Business Corporation can be transferred to a 2020 ProSeries Corporation.
- You can’t transfer from ProSeries to TurboTax.
- File names will look a little different after transferring from TurboTax to ProSeries. For example, if the file was "John and Jane Doe Tax Return.tax20YY" it'll transfer to ProSeries as "John and Jane Doe Tax Return.YYp" The difference is that ProSeries adds a character to the file extension to show the type of return.
- If the TurboTax file name contains a symbol, such as / , it can interfere with the transfer.
- Remove any password protection on the TurboTax file you're transferring. See here for instructions.
- This article references default installation paths and uses YY to reference the tax year in 20YY format. C: will always indicate the local drive and X: will always indicate the network drive.

What do I do if I see a ProSeries has stopped working error message?
Some customers see this error message when transferring TurboTax 2017 Individual 1040 files to ProSeries 2017 when the client file contains information for the state of Virginia. It’s caused by an incompatible character being generated in the TurboTax client file Virginia state data and has been known to affect TurboTax client files created or last updated prior to 02/16/2018.
TurboTax 2017 client files created or updated after this date should no longer produce this error message when they are transferred into ProSeries 2017. Returns created or last updated in TurboTax 2017 prior to this date will need to either be updated, opened and re-saved in TurboTax 2017 and/or have the VA state information removed from the client file prior to transferring into 2017 ProSeries.
