Can a married couple who is filing a joint return each claim the $500 Residential Energy Credit for their share of costs incurred on their joint main home?

No.

The more I know, the more I don't know.

As a follow up - Can they each get up to the $500 credit if they file separately?  (Same main house but expenses occurred prior to getting married)

"Same main house but expenses occurred prior to getting married"

You might be confusing Property and People. Make sure to read the instructions for Form 5695. It includes how to allocate by amount paid, since they don't both get the full credit. It matters if the home is joint, who paid, what was purchased, etc.

You have to look it up to know.
