Clients are beginning to reach out due to anticipated refunds for returns efiled in Mid-March and Mid-February claiming they have not received their refunds. The IRS website confirms they have not been released and are either waiting review or not processed yet. The clients involved are over 65. Is anyone else experiencing unusual refund delays?

Yes, another 15 million or so people. That doesn't include more than a million still waiting for their 2019 return to be processed.
Including current year returns, as of April 23, 2021, we had 16.9 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund.
