This letter was sent March 27, 2023, from IRS in Austin, to the personal representative of an estate that was closed in August 2021.
“Thank you for the inquiry dated April 15, 2016. We received Form 1040 filed for the decedent and tax period listed above; however, we need more information.
"The required Form 1310 is missing. Please complete, sign and return the form to us at the ddress shown at the top page of this letter. If you are an administrator or executor, check box “B” and send us a copy of the court certificate currently in effect showing your appointment as personal representative.”
What’s interesting is that the return I did in 2020, after receiving an IRS transcript, showed a balance due of more than $7,000, which was paid.
Client just called about a refund check she just received from her 2020 return. The refund claimed on the return was $5,266. The check was for $5,739, including $473 interest. This is the first she has heard about her 2020 return since it was filed in May 2021. That was a difficult time for her because her husband had died in March.
She signed a paper return as Surviving Spouse. It takes a while to process those. Direct deposit was requested, but it didn't go to the bank, even though the account is still open.
