ACTC Paper Checks – It’s Only a Technical Issue

The Treasury announced Friday that “Due to a technical issue expected to be resolved by the September payments, a small percentage of recipients — less than 15 percent — who received [Advanced Child Tax Credit] payments by direct deposit in July will be mailed paper checks for the August payment.”

At least we know these people have bank accounts, so when the check finally arrives in the mail they have a place to put it. There are 36 million families receiving ACTC payments, so it’s only about 4 million of them who may have had to delay a trip to the grocery store this weekend.

Those who need it the most haven’t moved anywhere because they can’t be evicted, so Treasury doesn’t have to worry much about address changes since February.

Do IRS a favor, though, and don’t call Monday. The lines are going to be busier than usual, with “Where’s My ACTC?” calls.

For the "Fun With ACTC" file:

Client filing joint return, two older kids, got $333 direct deposit for July.  They know they won't be eligible based on 2021 income, so they tried declining it online.  Husband managed to create an account, but wife could not.  Today she received a $200 paper check.
