I am getting this error. I am filing a joint return. Each spouse has put in exactly $23k to their 403(b). Why am I getting this error if the amount in Box 12 c item "E - Elective deferrals to 403(b) plan" does not exceed $23k?
The taxpayer's 403(b) contributions exceed the $23,000 limit. If the taxpayer does not qualify for the 15 years of service rule, the excess amount may need to be added to wages. Excess contributions can be entered in "Excess salary deferrals" If the taxpayer does qualify for the 15 years of service rule, check the "403(b) participant qualifying for the 15 years of service rule" box in the wages screen. Refer to Form 1040 instructions and IRS Pub. 571 for more information. US - Ref #7857

My first thought would be to check and make sure you coded the W-2s as Taxpayer/Spouse.
