I have a client with only foreign income that, for 2022 is below the Standard Deduction amount. I have completed Form 2555 (as I usually do) however ProConnect has the following critical error for online filing:
"At least one of the following fields must be present on an e-file return: total Income, adjusted gross income, tax on income, total credits, total tax or total payments. US - Ref #58719"
I have checked the help file and it says the following is one of the reasons this error appears:
"The taxpayer is filing Form 2555, all income is excluded, and no tax payments were made."
However all my returns for this client (and others) have had form 2555 completed with all the income excluded and no tax paid - they are non-US residents working overseas so this will usually be the case. So what is different to this online filing?
It's OK for 2023 when the same exclusion has been taken. Is this something peculiar for 2022 or is it because the AGI is less than the Standard Deduction? I don't want to revoke taking the FEIE because I understand that I won't be able to claim it for another 5 years if I do (at least not without a faff getting the IRS to agree to it).
Are there any solutions to this or do I simply need to file it in paper form for 2022?
Thanks in advance for any help.
He didn't receive any bank interest? Add $1 of taxable interest.
I have to say TaxGuyBill, that is bloody genius! Such a simple solution - there is still no tax to pay and I can file the return online....happy days! Thank you so much.
Incidentally no he didn't receive any bank interest - he is as poor as a church mouse (though expects to be coming into money soon through a divorce settlement).

Maybe he won $1 on a scratch-off lottery ticket? 🙂
