I don't think "prior year" has anything to do with it at all. What you submit to the IRS needs to match what appears in SSA computer (FN, MN, LN split appropriately), with the modification that if the combined total name is too long you are instructed to use only initials for middle, then first, names. NEVER truncate the Last Name.
"Match versus last year" is crap. Client may have married, widowed, and re-married again with three different valid, current, & correct Social Security Cards over the course of the year. You Match SSA Computer. That is the only passing grade.

Thank you for taking the time to post - but the state of CT was specific in the reason for holding up the refund.
Do you know of a way to increase the length of the last name field?
Sadly, there are times that Lacerte has a certain number of characters permitted and not even all of those get used (displayed on the form, or shown in the efile data if you look).
As well, IRS & state may have their own stipulations. (Say for example IRS allows for 32 characters of a street address, but StateX only permits 28. [Note for the record that I purely MADE THOSE NUMBERS UP.])
Some people have long names. There isn't a lot you can do about that. Type in what you can. You could also possibly include more full information on page47/Notes, as a Statement riding with the federal and/or state(s) return(s), with the whole construct spelled out correctly and note the character limitation that you are running up against.
