Return name is really just a notation for your reference only. Your client's name doesn't even need to be there. You can have a client named Kenobi, Obi-Wan, create two returns for the same year, and name the first as "My Favorite Client's Tax Return" and the second as "My Favorite Client's Tax Projection".
Your client's name on the dashboard is more important than the return name but the return name could be useful when you have multiple versions of a return (so that you remember the purpose for which each one was created).
Client name on the dashboard and the taxpayer name in the return are not linked. That may be a surprise to some but that's how it works in PTO. You can have Allen, Gracie listed on the dashboard but her taxpayer name on the return could be Burns, Gracie, taking the last name from her husband, George Burns. This means you should update your client's name on the dashboard if there's a name change.
