resubmitting rejected return

Parents' e-filed return was rejected as college kid claimed self.  College kids used turbo tax originally and then did a 1040-x to "un-claimed self".  How long should the parents wait to re-authorize e-filing their return?

Given that even BEFORE the mess in Washington, amended returns were taking a while (not necessarily six months - Bob has better intel than I do...) it is unlikely the kid's amended return will be processed any time soon.  The last time I had this happen, the kid's return didn't get processed by Oct 15, xxxx.

You can 'wait & see' but it is highly likely the parent's return will need to be paper filed.

(edit.... I have trained my clients to FORBID their kids from filing until Mom/Dad's return is accepted as this is a royal pain in the a$$ )

You can train your clients but can they train their kids?

IRS is now working on amended returns filed in February 2025.  Past performance is not always an indicator of future results.  IRS is losing lots of revenue agents and revenue officers, but the lower-graded tax examiners and contact reps are still at 90% capacity.  (This may change without notice or reason.)

I'm not sure how paper filing will speed the process.  I have been dealing with a case where the noncustodial parent is entitled to claim the dependent but the custodial parent filed first and incorrectly.  Refund on a paper return took about three months.  But I don't think the custodial parent filed anything, so it's probably a matter of "pay now and ask questions, or send them a warning, later."

You should be able to efile the parents' return if the primary taxpayer gets an IP PIN.

ah... Rick... you've mentioned that before.   Hope it can work for the OP.

Bob, so far the parents 'have' been able to impress on the kids that they should 'hurry up & wait' to avoid the issue.
