reclamation of social security benefits from 2016

Taxpayer's spouse received social security benefits in 2016. Spouse is now deceased. US Treasury reclaimed the benefits in 2020 (took them back through the bank). The benefits were partially included in income in 2016 and taxed. The time to file an amended return has past. Anyone know how to recoup the taxes from 2016?

Was 2016 a joint return?  How much was taxed that year?

"Section 1341 Repayment - Claim of Right/Social Security Repayment"

I was going to post that TaxSlayer link right after I warmed up my coffee.  I'm not sure how Section 1341 works, when the repaid income was on a joint return and now a spouse is deceased.  Probably worth further research, and if no answer found, give it a try.
