Why is Federal Form 8960 still getting a critical diagnostic with the message, "If you file the return, there is the potential that calculations could change, and that you may need to file an amended return when the instructions are final"? Can we e-file these returns without a potential for an amendment? What is going on Lacerte? It's 2/19/26, my clients are upset with this delay. Please advise when this critical and form 8960 & instructions will be available to e-file.
The diagnostic is a CYA. I have a few clients waiting on this (and other forms/instructions to). I'll concede that it's frustrating.
Thankfully my clients have been understanding thus far. Especially for this form, the ones that can take a joke, I can say, "if you weren't so rich, you wouldn't have this form in your tax return."
And the gentle but serious answer, "better to wait and get it final than rush it and have to risk amending."
Just file it.
I don't know of any changes this year to the 8960. The 2025 instructions for 8960 are available online if you want to review them against your client situation.
