e-file attachments

Joni T EA

I have been sending pdf attachments with tax returns for years with my e-filed return.

Yesterday I got a call from IRS regarding a 2022 amended return and the representative said there were no attachments.  I looked in my Lacerte and it shows 4 attachments. I faxed them over to her hopefully this will resolve the issue.  This is frustrating because it's holding up the processing of the return.

From time to time my clients would get letters from IRS asking for documents.  These documents (EX: brokerage stmt) were all attached as pdf to the original return.  Never could figure out why the IRS needed this since they were attached as pdf on the original.

Yesterday I noticed when doing an amended 2023 there was a diagnostic that said when e-filing to attach all schedules that were changed and any support documents to the return.  I have never in the past seen this diagnostic or attached the forms or schedules that changed.  I thought when the amended return was filed the needed forms would be sent.  I looked in 2022 and 2024 on amended returns I've done, and this diagnostic does not appear.  Its is informational not critical.

When I called Lacerte support the person said all forms that are bold will be sent with the amended return.  I thought only the changed forms would be sent, but that's ok if they send all.

However, after my phone call with IRS and seeing this diagnostic, I'm wondering if I really do need to attach the change forms as a pdf.

Of course, if could always be the IRS not knowing where to see the attachments.  I'm sending an email to my stakeholder liaison regarding this.  I'm hoping IRS will post this on the IMRS.

If you have had this same issue, please reply to this post or email me:  [REMOVED]

thanks
