I would hope that this is a one time occurrence.
What did you do to "save" the data. It should be saved automatically.
If it repeats Contact Support
That happened to me a couple weeks ago... but it was awful. I printed the tax return (it was fine) and mailed it to the client. When I received the signed 8879 forms back and went to electronic file, a quarter of the data I had entered for that tax return was gone! It was horrible. Had to have the client PDF all the data I had mailed back to him. Thank heavens I always look at the 8879 in the computer as a "check it" procedure. It was about mid March if I recall correctly. (there might be a bug somewhere). Due to that issue, I have been over diligent in my check it procedures with every incoming signed 8879.
It has happened to me with a couple of client files. Entered all of the data, sent them to review, when they went to review them, all of the data was gone. It was like I hadn't worked on it at all except the client log still showed that I did in fact work in the files. Lacerte is having some serious issues this year.
@sgatlanta @PuzzlingInGa what type of network are you on? Possibly the workstation is not saving on the correct drive?
I don't think it has anything to do with our network. Our IT company has checked the network and nothing seems wrong. It doesn't happen to all clients, just random ones. Not one workstation but different ones. I wouldn't think a network issue would save the activity log but not the activity. Also, we've now found where partial data will disappear from a client.
same Server all of the other client data is being saved on. 😄 I don't go 'round switching out my Server. There are some bugs in the Lacerte system. Someone should be looking into that, maybe? I bet there are a bunch of folk who are being hit and just are doing what I did up until now: looking at our Workstation, Server, firewalls, everything we can think of. I have been hit with so many Lacerte issues this year it's bordering on comic. I was musing today that maybe Lacerte has already jumped onto Windows 11 ... and the wee fairies are striking out from within W11 to Lacerte. 😄 There's a little hop skip freeze thing going on from time to time, also.
I'm not a newbie on Server use. So, no... thanks for the idea but that is not what is going on.
Also... it just happened again a few days ago. Rental income entered. Rental income seen on the tax return when I viewed the completed tax return inside the computer. GONE when I printed. (And I didn't realize it until the client received the tax return.) So far it's only two clients and I hope to heaven those are the ONLY ones. I am obsessive about my review process. I've caught other ones before sending the completed tax returns to clients. Pretty embarrassing but the client has been with me 30 years and understood technology gifts. 😄 I'll be adding more layers to check check check examine examine examine. I may offer bonuses to clients if they find "errors" on the tax return they receive from me. Ha! (I'm betting only the two have escaped out of my office unfixed.
One. Technically one escaped in that condition. The other... the client received my CORRECT tax return. And when I went to electronic file that 20% of data was missing. AND I am talking TWO workstations this year... so it's not my workstation hardware. I'm done looking at MY equipment or software for this. This is a Lacerte problem. Most of the time I just sit back and wait for the crowd and say nothing, knowing Lacerte will fix (whatever) when enough people that are not me speak up. (And now, back to tax season.... almost done with the Primary Tax Season..... wheeeee.
Best of luck. This is a user supported site, so definitely get in touch with the REAL SUPPORT via phone to see what they can do.
Do very regular backups to also help to stay this problem. I back up to two different SSIDs at least once a day.
Thanks George! Oh ... yes! Good point. I bet folk are already phoning the support phone lines, etc. I'm not gonna worry. Once I realized it wasn't MY stuff I stopped worrying. Lacerte will fix the issues. I just need to keep keeping on and use the eyes of a Hawk. 😄 Good luck to you all on the Season as the light at the tunnel is shining. And good advice for backup. I have continuous back up. Never had to go retrieve anything. YET. lolololol. Maybe this will be the lucky year.
At one point I was very tempted to throw a workstation out the window. 😄 😄 😄 Poor workstation; not its fault.
I forgot to mention that client statuses just randomly change for no apparent reason. There’s no pattern to the mayhem. 🤣
oh my gosh! That is hysterical! HEY!!!! I know where one of the bugs is in the system!!!! I just got two more eMails from clients and they are missing the SAME income (this is THREE of them for this so far). The income that repetitively disappears is gross RENTAL INCOME !!!!! (at least I know one of the "BETTER EXAMINE THIS OFTEN" areas)
Real Estate involves land. Land has worms and other critters. I think they (maybe night crawlers) are coming up out of the ground and browsing in your pixels. They probably like 1s better than 0s, since they look more like blades of grass. I don't know the cure, but I am pretty sure it is some type of critter getting in there and eating you 1s. They never heard about Cheery Os!
I have used Lacerte for as long as it has been around. I, fortunately, have never experience anything like this. I hope it resolves itself. I really hope you can figure out WHY?
That is FUNNY, George. I love it. 🙂 Yep. I've used Lacerte from the beginning, also, and never have experienced a buggy year like this one has been! Thankfully we're close to the Primary tax season end and my sense of humor has kicked in, rather than my initial constant frustration. 🙂 How can one not laugh at all this; truly. It is a RELIEF that the rental income thing has become repetitive so I know it's not my brain skipping out into senility (or is it? :-D) Cuz being repetitive means I can explain to my impacted clients how on Earth their rental income isn't on those tax returns!!! Thankfully, I have amazing awesome clients who the majority have been with me for over 30 years.
...and thankfully it's rental income and doesn't impact these clients taxwise much on the 2024 tax returns, as each earns so much money that any loss is restricted nearly entirely due to their "passive loss" (when sans gross income) nature. Yes, it was embarrassing, but... since they talk to me, and are good communicators, we've shared some good laughs.
