1040NR

I am trying to enter social security on a 1040NR.  It tells me not to put on Social Security input screen but on the 1040-NR, Schedule NEC.  There is no place to enter it on that screen, its for withholding and there is no withholding

I don't have an answer for you, but I thought I'd add some more details in case any other users can weigh in.  I made up a dummy return to try and replicate/solve this. I input an amount for SSI income on Screen 14.1, and I see the error you're referring to (Diagnostic 54921, I checked the diagnostic center, no solutions or workarounds are listed there).

And I agree, I don't see anywhere to input it on Screen 58.1.

You will likely need to call Support or send this return to them (Tools>Communications>Service Requests / Lacerte Email).

I don't do any 1040-NR returns, so I'm going to ask a crazy-out-there question: is it possible that you need to file a 1040 return instead of a 1040-NR because of the SSI, or that maybe it isn't reportable? Just reductio ad absurdum here.

Like @Karl I don't do 1040NR returns. Here is what I did to make it work.

Screen 14.1 enter the withholding only and I assume there was none.

Screen 58.1 > Tax on Inc. not Effectively .... > Social Security > Other Percent 1 Column > 85% of the Social Security received (Use a calculator) Page 43 of the Instructions

@Phillyjkr What form was the Social Security reported on? Are you sure you should be filing 1040NR?

Thanks. I finally got it to go through with just experimenting on places to do it. I have to file an NR for the foreign income exclusion

I'm glad you got it to work, but I did want to address something in this reply. You can take the foreign-earned income exclusion and still file a regular 1040. The 1040-NR is for non-resident aliens. Usually, people filing the 1040-NR aren't eligible for the FEIE.
