Smartvault printing

Intuit / Lacerte product enhancement.

When I print an amended return to Smartvault, it overwrites the original return.  Same issue when printing acceptance letters - if an extension acceptance letter is printed, it gets overwritten when printing the e-file acceptance for the tax return filing.

There should be different naming conventions for each type of PDF printed out of the program to distinguish from tax returns, amended returns, estimated tax payments, FINCEN filings, etc.  Otherwise we need to rename printed documents that we don't want overridden.

This has to happen at the software level as Smartvault is merely a storage location, and Intuit is naming the file that is being printed.

If anyone has other ideas or procedures, please reply to this post.

Thanks

After printing from Lacerte to SV, we rename the file in SV.  Renamed Client # Client Name 1 (last number is dependent upon how many times it has gone to review).  Once return is approved by reviewer, then change to final instead of number.  We also rename acceptance letters on extension to have at least EXT in the name.  If its an amended return, amend or amended in acceptance letter or return file name.

I currently do something similar, but this is 2024 and someone in the vast Intuit software engineering department should be able to write code so that as PDF's are generated from different options within the software that they have unique file names so as to not overwrite each other.

No reason why an extension acceptance letter is overwritten by a return acceptance letter, or a subsequent amended return replaces the original.

This isn't rocket science.  The issue is programmers are not end users and don't understand the workflow.

@smartcpaA couple of items

You have posted this question to the Lacerte SDK group, which is not related to your issue (maybe others?).

As a SmartVault user, in this case the naming, I believe is done by SmartVault, not Lacerte.  If you print it to a standard PDF (to say your desktop) you will get a different file name than that seen in Smartvault

As for the "WorkAround", we have been also using the "add a -1 at the end", but I think going forward I am going to create a new folder in the Client Tax returns with the date of the original return and just move the files.  Easy to do in Connected Desktop.

We do PREFIX the Amended returns with the word AMENDED but it's after printing so yes, you need to move or rename the file(s) first.

I think the SV Enhancement should be to add a "Save As" dialog box (configurable option) to their print process.
