Installment agreement request cannot be e-filed when the amount of tax due on the return is greater than $50,000.

Can I e-file a return even though I must paper file a form 9465 and related form 433f?

Solution: Per the 9465 Instructions:

"If the amount you owe on line 9 is greater than$50,000, you cannot file Form 9465 electronically. If the amount you owe on line 9 is greater than $50,000, you must complete Form 433-F, Collection Information Statement, and file it with this form. You can download Form 433-F at IRS.gov/Forms."

If you would like to e-file the return without Form 9465 and file Form 9465 separately:

1) Go to Screen 80, Installment Agreement Request
2) Delete all entries from Screen 80
3) Go to Screen 3, Miscellaneous Information
4) Scroll down to the Direct Deposit of Refund/ Electronic Payment section
5) Uncheck the box, Electronic payment of balance due (if selected)
6) E-file the Return (if complete)

After the return has been successfully e-filed:

1) Go back to Screen 80, Installment Agreement Request
2) Re-enter the information to generate Form 9465
3) Check the box, Not filing with Form 1040 (separate filing instructions)
4) Go to Screen 5.1, Invoice, Letter, Filing Instructions
5) Scroll down to the Filing Instructions section
6) Check the box, Installment Agreement Request (9465) (To generate separate filing instructions for Form 9465)
