The following diagnostic is generating:

California Use Tax # {PrefixNum} : An entry is required in the "Total purchases subject to use tax" field.

Solution:

Click on the diagnostic from the Diagnostics tab and enter the appropriate amount in Total purchases subject to use tax. Or navigate to State & Local>Screen 54 Taxes>California Use Tax enter the appropriate amount in Total purchases subject to use tax. Informational, won't prevent e-file transmission.

CA requires that you complete this. It is a critical diagnostic is due to the CA Form 540 instructions. (I think the FTB wants to try to put preparers on the hook any unpaid liabilities, but I don't know.)

I have had 2 clients who have an actual use tax liability. Except for those two, I always input 1 in that box in form 54.012
