e-file:  Form 3903 without being marked as a Member of the Armed Forces and doing a permanent move due to change in station will fail when electronic filing.  This return will have to be filed as a conventional paper return.  (ref. #55110)

My client is not a member of the Armed Forces - is a CA full year resident and moved within CA too, and had some expenses associated with it.  I understand that the federal has suspended the moving expenses until 2025 but CA did not conform.  Since the diagnostic is critical and suggest paper filing, is it ok to e-file first the federal only without the moving expenses (Form 3903), and then later on once federal has been accepted, update the tax return to report the moving expenses and then e-file the CA return only?  Thanks in advance.

Solution: Moving expenses has been suspended for federal until 2025, however you can still e-file returns by removing all expenses for Form 3903 and e-file US only. Then go into the return, and re-enter the expenses for CA purposes, and e-file the CA return only.
