If this does not match the name control in the IRS database (see the SS-4 confirmation notice from the IRS), enter the correct value in "Name Control [O]", Screen 2.2, code 10. For assistance in determining the correct Name Control, the taxpayer or authorized representative may contact the IRS Business Specialty Tax Line.
This can result in reject Error R0000-901-01: filer's EIN and Name Control in the Return Header must match, The name control in the e-file filing (typically the first four characters of the legal name of the business entity) must match the name control in the IRS records for the entity.
Solution: This reject is common with trust or estates that start with the word "The" or a person's name. It is generally the first 4 characters of the entity's name without regard to "The." This reject can often be resolved by changing the name control using the override field referenced above. For example, an estate named "The Estate of John Smith" might have a name control of JOHN or SMIT.
